A charming set of eight antique children’s books by Nina Rhoades, published in Boston by Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co. between 1901 and 1914 and illustrated by Bertha Davidson Hoxie.

These books belong to Rhoades’ popular early-20th-century juvenile stories sometimes known as the “Brick House Books,” a group of wholesome stories about friendship, family life, kindness, and moral character that were widely read by young girls in the early 1900s.

Rhoades’ stories often center on young girls navigating everyday challenges—new homes, friendships, family responsibilities, and acts of kindness—while learning lessons about honesty, courage, and compassion.

The books are illustrated throughout by Bertha Davidson Hoxie, whose classic black-and-white drawings complement the warm, sentimental tone of the stories.

Several titles in this set are interconnected through recurring characters and shared settings.

These books capture the tone of Edwardian-era children’s literature, where everyday life, moral lessons, and strong friendships form the heart of the story.
