D’Après Les Relevés & Restaurations Des Anciens Pensionnaires de L’Académie De France à Rome

Publiés sous la direction de H. d’Espouy, professeur à l’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris - 2 Volumes, 1897 & 1905.

Translated from French, this is the two-volume Fragments of Ancient Architecture, after the surveys & restorations of the former residents of the French Academy in Rome, published under the direction of H. d’Espouy, professor at the École des Beaux-Arts.   These volumes, published in 1897 and 1905, reproduce the architectural studies, measured drawings, and restorations created by the pensionnaires (resident scholars) from the most prestigious architectural training program in Europe at the turn of the century.

The set contains hundreds of large-format heliogravure and lithographic plates documenting classical Greek and Roman architecture. These include precise measured drawings, reconstructions, decorative motifs, capitals, cornices, moldings, friezes, column orders, and architectural ornaments taken directly from archaeological sites.  These works were used for decades as reference material by architects, academic studios, and design schools, and are now prized for their oversized plates, spectacular engraving quality, and scholarly importance.

Complete sets have become uncommon, especially in collectible condition.  This set is not just decorative; it’s historically significant.   Each volume measures 13” x 17.5”.  The text on the spines is faint and has worn off over the years.  The covers have faded and show some soiling.  The interior of each volume is in perfect condition.
